My submission for the supernatural video assignment, "If Death Do Us Part," is inspired by the ideas of a black widow and eternal youth. The film follows a couple as their relationship unfolds, from their 'love at first sight' meeting to the moment of the young man’s untimely death. Only after is it revealed through an assortment of old photos, love letters, and wedding rings that his lover is a supernatural being who, through physical contact, slowly drains the life from her victims to maintain her youth.

Early on, I decided to use the 1939 song “If I Didn’t Care” by The Ink Spots as a primary element of the video. The lyrics of the song provided irony given my plotline; the singer uses descriptions of intimacy as proof that he cares deeply for his loved one, yet the woman in my video engages in the very same kind of intimacy while not genuinely caring about her partner at all. In this context, I found that “If I Didn’t Care” had the potential to be both romantic and unsettling, and thus used the track as the basis for my assignment.
